The Responsibilities of a Vet Tech in Walnut Grove MS

Part of your determination might be based on the amount of time and money that you have to commit to your training, but the primary determiner will most likely be which specialty interests you the most. What technicians and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are numerous functions that they can perform within the Walnut Grove MS veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose health issues, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only provide support to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work exclusive of the typical vet practice, for example for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the responsibilities and education prerequisites for each specialty.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have gone through a formal training program, either as an intern or apprentice in a vet clinic or hospital, or by finishing a certificate program at a trade school or community college. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not associated with more complicated undertakings, for example assisting with surgeries. Some of their typical duties may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing exam rooms and equipment, or controlling animals during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians get more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually obtain a 2 year Associate Degree, preferably from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their fundamental job function is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from veterinary assistants is that they are included in more involved tasks, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or administering medication. All states currently require veterinary technicians pass a credentialing exam for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are comparable to veterinary technicians and essentially carry out the same job functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally requires 4 years. Therefore the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s higher level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are additionally mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. A number may receive certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Walnut Grove MS labs or research facilities also.

Vet Tech Online Programs Offered in Walnut Grove

student attending online vet tech school in Walnut Grove MSAn approach that might be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while going to veterinary school is to enroll in an online program. Because the classes are provided over the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The course of study is taught using several venues, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of veterinary technician and technologist degrees require clinical training, that portion can usually be completed as an internship or work study program at a local Walnut Grove MS veterinarian clinic or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenses, such as for travel and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more traditional classroom courses. Just make certain that the online school that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally recognized accrediting agency. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is furnished for a complete education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet tech program may be the perfect choice for you.

What to Ask Walnut Grove MS Veterinary Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Walnut Grove MS vet tech schoolsAt this point you probably have selected which veterinary degree that you want to earn, and if you want to study online or attend a school on campus. Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, trade and vocational schools in the Walnut Grove MS area as well as across the United States, you must ask some qualifying questions to help narrow down your list of options. As we pointed out in our introduction, many prospective students start by concentrating on location and tuition expense. But we have previously mentioned other significant qualifiers, for example accreditation and internship programs. And obviously you need to select a program that offers the degree and specialty that you want to earn. These and other qualifications are addressed in the checklist of questions that you should ask the vet tech programs that you are looking at.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you make sure that the vet tech college you select is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously stated, one of the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding screening process that confirms you will obtain a quality education. Also, accreditation is essential if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since numerous programs are not offered for non-accredited programs. And finally, having a degree or certificate from an accredited program is often a requirement for employment for many Walnut Grove MS area veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The vet vocational school or college and program you enroll in must have an exceptional reputation within the vet field. You can start your due diligence by asking the colleges you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job assistance network. Other tips include checking with internet school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting agencies as well. You can ask the Mississippi school licensing department if there have been any complaints or infractions involving your specific schools. As a final tip, contact some Walnut Grove MS vet clinics that you may want to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think about your school choices. They might even recommend one or more colleges not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to obtain clinical hands on training as a vet tech is to work in a professional environment. Find out if the colleges you are considering have internship programs established with Walnut Grove MS veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. Most veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many provide it through internships. Not only will the experience be valuable regarding the clinical training, but an internship may also help develop associations in the local vet community and aid in the search for employment after graduation.

Is Job Placement Provided?  Finding a job after graduating from a veterinary technician school may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. To begin with, find out what the graduation rates are for the schools you are reviewing. A lower rate could mean that the instructors were ineffective at teaching the curriculum or that a number of students were disappointed with the program and quit. Next, check that the schools have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could indicate that the program has an excellent reputation within the Walnut Grove MS veterinary community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not well regarded by employers or that the job placement program is a failure at placing students.

How Large are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you may get little or no personalized instruction from the teachers. Request from the Walnut Grove MS schools you are considering what their classroom student to teacher ratios are. You may also want to attend a few classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between students and teachers. Get evaluations from students concerning the quality of instruction. Also, talk with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we already covered location, but there are a couple of more points to consider on the topic. If you are going to commute to your vet tech classes from your Walnut Grove MS home, you need to confirm that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the campus is located close by or within a large city. In addition, if you do choose to attend a school in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition costs particularly for community and state colleges. On the other hand, attending online classes may be an alternative that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the need for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And last, it’s important that you ascertain if the veterinary schools you are considering offer class times flexible enough to accommodate your schedule. For example, many students continue to work full time and can only attend classes on the weekends or at night near Walnut Grove MS. Some may only be able to attend classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Confirm that the class times you need are offered prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make up classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family responsibilities. You might find that an online school is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your hectic life.
