After all, you have to find and enroll in a college that will deliver the proper training to ensure that you can succeed as a vet tech. But just how do you tackle analyzing and comparing programs so that you can make the best selection? Many future students begin their due diligence process by looking for schools that are near their homes. Once they have found some local schools, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and hone in on those. Although location and cost are important concerns when comparing vet tech programs, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your evaluations. Qualifications such as accreditation and internship programs should be looked into as well. The main idea is that there are questions you need to be asking the veterinary technician programs you are reviewing before you make a final decision. We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we review them we’ll discuss the various responsibilities of veterinary technicians and the training options available.

The Responsibilities of a Vet Tech in Cherryvale KS

Part of your determination might be predicated on the amount of time and money that you have to invest in your training, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialty appeals to you the most. What techs and assistants have in common is that they all work under the immediate direction of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are numerous duties that they can perform within the Cherryvale KS veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe medicines, diagnose ailments, or perform surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work away from the typical vet practice, such as for zoos, animal shelters or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the job functions and education requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in most cases will have undergone a structured training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a vet clinic or hospital, or by graduating from a certificate program at a trade school or community college. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the veterinarians and vet techs in the completion of their duties. Generally they are not associated with more complex undertakings, for instance assisting with surgical procedures. Some of their usual duties may include working at the front desk, preparing and cleaning exam rooms and equipment, or controlling pets during examinations.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training in contrast to assistants and usually acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet equivalent of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist vets with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they vary from veterinary assistants is that they are involved in more complex duties, for instance assisting with surgical procedures or providing medicine. All states currently require veterinary techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to vet techs and for the most part carry out the same work functions. They are mandated to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which generally takes four years. Therefore the main difference between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career opportunities, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also required to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Vet techs and technologists can specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Cherryvale KS laboratories or research facilities also.

Online Vet Tech Schools Offered in Cherryvale

student attending online vet tech school in Cherryvale KSAn approach that may make sense for those with a hectic schedule or who are working full-time while attending veterinarian school is to enroll in an online program. Since the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can attend on their own timetable wherever a computer is accessible. The educational program is taught using several methods, including videos, slide shows and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that portion can usually be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Cherryvale KS veterinary practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, may in many instances decrease the cost of your education. Tuition and ancillary expenditures, such as for travel and study materials, can be lower compared to more traditional classroom programs. Just make certain that the program that you select is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting agency. With the online classes and the practical training, everything is included for a comprehensive education. So if you are dedicated enough to learn in this more independent manner, an online vet tech school may be the perfect choice for you.

Questions to Ask Cherryvale KS Veterinary Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Cherryvale KS vet tech schoolsBy now you should have decided on which veterinary degree that you would like to obtain, and if you intend to study online or attend a college on campus. Since there are an abundance of vet community colleges, technical and vocational schools in the Cherryvale KS area and across the USA, you should ask some qualifying questions in order to fine tune your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many prospective students start by focusing on location and the cost of tuition. But we have previously pointed out other essential qualifiers, which include internship programs and accreditation. And of course you want to choose a school that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are covered in the checklist of questions that you should ask the veterinary technician programs that you are considering.

Is the Veterinary College Accredited?  It’s essential that you make sure that the veterinary technician school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As previously discussed, among the most highly respected is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Vocational schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through a demanding screening process that ensures you will get a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial assistance, since many programs are not obtainable for non-accredited colleges. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is in many cases a precondition for employment for a number of Cherryvale KS area veterinary practices and hospitals.

What is the School’s Reputation?  The veterinarian trade school or college and program you choose must have an excellent reputation within the vet field. You can start your due diligence by asking the schools you are interested in for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include looking on internet school ranking websites and checking with the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Kansas school licensing authority if there have been any grievances or infractions relating to your specific schools. As a final tip, call some Cherryvale KS vet clinics that you might wish to work for after you get your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They may even suggest one or more programs not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The most effective approach to get practical hands on experience as a vet tech is to work in a medical environment. Ask if the colleges you are considering have internship programs arranged with Cherryvale KS veterinarians, vet clinics or hospitals. Almost all veterinary medicine programs mandate clinical training and many provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be beneficial relative to the clinical training, but an internship may also help develop associations in the local vet community and help in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Offered?  Searching for a job after graduating from a vet tech school may be difficult without the help of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are considering. A low rate might signify that the teachers were ineffective at teaching the syllabus or that a number of students were unhappy with the program and quit. Next, confirm that the colleges have a job placement program and find out what their placement rates are. A high placement rate could mean that the college has an exceptional reputation within the Cherryvale KS veterinarian community and has a substantial network of contacts for student placements. A low rate could mean that the training is not highly thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are larger, you may get little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Cherryvale KS programs you are researching what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to participate in a couple of classes (if practical) to monitor the interaction between instructors and students. Get evaluations from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the instructors and determine what their qualifications are as well as their approaches to teaching.

Where is the College Located?  Of course, we previously covered location, but there are several more points to make on the subject. If you are going to commute to your vet tech classes from your Cherryvale KS home, you have to confirm that the commuting time is compatible with your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to check out the route won’t be the same as the drive during rush hour traffic, especially if the campus is located in or near a large city. In addition, if you do opt to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges especially for community and state colleges. Of course taking online classes could be an option that will provide you with more flexibility and decrease the necessity for travel.

Do the Classes Fit Your Schedule?  And finally, it’s important that you ascertain if the veterinarian programs you are considering offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue working full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings near Cherryvale KS. Some might only be able to go to class in the morning or in the afternoon. Make certain that the class times you need are available prior to enrolling. Also, determine if you can make-up classes that you may miss due to work, sickness or family issues. You may discover that an online school is the ideal solution to fit your veterinary training into your busy life.

Cherryvale, Kansas

Cherryvale was founded on the land of the Osage Indians who were pushed out by veterans of the American Civil War looking for land. The first white man to purchase property and settle here was Mr. Abe Eaton, who later sold it to the Kansas City, Lawrence & Southern Kansas Railroad which then became the Leavenworth, Lawrence & Galveston Railway. The town site was platted by the railroad in 1871.[8] It was named Cherryvale from its position in the valley of Cherry Creek.[9]

Between 1871 and 1873, at least eleven people vanished in the vicinity of an inn and general store operated by the Bender family about eight miles (13 km) northeast of Cherryvale. Following the disappareance of the Benders in 1873, it was discovered that they had apparently murdered a number of travellers. Between eight and eleven bodies were discovered buried on the premises. Governor Thomas A. Osborn offered a reward of $2,000 for the apprehension of the Benders, but they were never found.[10][11]

The main part of the town was destroyed by fire in 1873, but was soon rebuilt, and in 1880 Cherryvale became a city of the third and afterwards of the second class. Natural gas, which is used as a factory fuel and for street and domestic lighting, was found here in 1889, and oil several years later.[6]
