After all, you have to find and enroll in a program that will provide the necessary training to ensure that you can be successful as a veterinary technician. But just how do you tackle evaluating and comparing schools so that you can make the correct selection? Many future students begin their due diligence process by looking for campuses that are close to their residences. Once they have located some nearby colleges, they ascertain which ones have the lowest tuition and focus on those. Although cost and location are significant considerations when assessing vet technician schools, they are by no means the only critical ones when making your comparisons. Qualifiers such as internship programs and accreditation should be evaluated also. The main idea is that there are questions you ought to be asking the vet technician schools you are looking at before you make an ultimate choice. We have provided several in this article in order to help get you started, but before we discuss them we’ll talk about the various responsibilities of veterinary technicians and the training alternatives available.

The Role of a Vet Tech in Yazoo City MS

Part of your determination may be based on the amount of time and money that you have to devote to your education, but the primary factor will most likely be which specialization interests you the most. What techs and assistants share in common is that they both work under the direct guidance of a practicing and licensed veterinarian. And while there are numerous tasks that they can carry out within the Yazoo City MS veterinary clinic or hospital, they can’t prescribe drugs, diagnose ailments, or carry out surgeries. In those areas they may only furnish assistance to a licensed veterinarian. There are technologists and technicians that work outside of the standard vet practice, such as for animal shelters, zoos or law enforcement. Let’s take a look at the duties and training requirements for each position.

  • Vet Assistants in almost all cases will have undergone a formal training program, either as an apprentice or intern in a practice, or by finishing a certificate program at a community college or vocational school. As the name implies, their job function is to assist the vets and vet technicians in the performance of their duties. Usually they are not involved with more complex tasks, such as assisting with surgeries. Some of their usual responsibilities may include working at the front desk, cleaning and preparing examination rooms and equipment, or handling animals during exams.
  • Vet Technicians go through more extensive training in contrast to assistants and generally acquire a two year Associate Degree, ideally from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program. They are in a sense the vet counterparts of medical nurses, since their basic job duty is to assist veterinarians with diagnosing and treating animal patients. Where they stand apart from vet assistants is that they are included in more complicated activities, for example assisting with surgeries or administering medicine. All states currently require vet techs pass a credentialing examination for either registration, certification or licensing.
  • Vet Technologists are similar to veterinary techs and basically perform the same job functions. They are required to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in veterinary technology, which usually requires 4 years. So the only real distinction between a vet technologist and a technician is the technologist’s more advanced level of education. But with an advanced degree comes more career options, higher salaries and potential management positions. They are also mandated to pass a credentialing examination for either licensing, registration or certification.

Veterinary techs and technologists may specialize in areas such as anesthesia, internal medicine or urgent care. Some may obtain certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) to work in  Yazoo City MS labs or research facilities also.

Online Veterinary Technician Schools Offered in Yazoo City

student attending online vet tech school in Yazoo City MSAn alternative that might be a solution for those with a busy lifestyle or who are working full-time while going to veterinarian college is to enroll in an online training program. Because the classes are made available by means of the internet, students can study on their own schedule wherever a computer is available. The course of study is taught using various methods, including slide shows, videos and live streaming webinars. And since the majority of vet tech and technologist degrees require practical training, that segment can normally be carried out as an internship or work study program at a local Yazoo City MS veterinarian practice or hospital. Distance learning, as it is also called, can in many instances lower the cost of your education. Tuition and supplementary expenses, such as for traveling and study supplies, can be cheaper compared to more standard classroom programs. Just make certain that the online school that you enroll in is accredited, either by the AVMA or another nationally certified accrediting organization. With the online courses and the practical training, everything is furnished for a comprehensive education. So if you are disciplined enough to learn in this more self-reliant manner, an online vet tech school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Yazoo City MS Vet Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Yazoo City MS vet tech schoolsBy now you probably have determined which veterinarian degree that you want to obtain, and if you prefer to study online or attend a program on campus. Since there are a large number of veterinarian community colleges, technical and vocational schools in the Yazoo City MS area as well as across the United States, you need to ask some important questions to help narrow down your list of alternatives. As we discussed in our introduction, many potential students start by focusing on location and tuition expense. But we have already mentioned other significant qualifiers, for instance accreditation and internship programs. And of course you want to enroll in a school that offers the specialty and degree that you are interested in. These and other qualifications are reviewed in the checklist of questions that you need to ask the vet tech colleges that you are reviewing.

Is the Veterinary School Accredited?  It’s imperative that you confirm that the vet tech school you enroll in is accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency. As earlier stated, one of the most highly regarded is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Trade schools and colleges that are accredited by the AVMA have gone through an extensive screening process that verifies you will receive a superior education. Also, accreditation is important if you are requesting a student loan or financial aid, since a large number of programs are not offered for non-accredited schools. And finally, having a certificate or degree from an accredited college is in many cases a precondition for employment for many Yazoo City MS area veterinarian clinics and hospitals.

What is the College’s Reputation?  The veterinary college or vocational school and program you select should have an excellent reputation within the vet community. You can initiate your due diligence by asking the colleges you are reviewing for endorsements from the employers in their job placement network. Other tips include checking with internet school rating websites and contacting the school’s accrediting organizations as well. You can ask the Mississippi school licensing authority if there have been any complaints or violations relating to your targeted schools. As a final pointer, contact some Yazoo City MS vet clinics that you might want to work for after you receive your training. Ask what they think of your school choices. They may even recommend some schools not on your list.

Are there Internship Programs?  The best way to obtain practical hands on training as a vet tech is to work in a medical setting. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have internship programs established with Yazoo City MS veterinarians, vet hospitals or practices. The majority of veterinary medicine programs require practical training and a large number provide it by means of internships. Not only will the experience be valuable relative to the practical training, but an internship may also help develop connections in the local veterinarian community and assist in the search for a position after graduation.

Is Job Assistance Provided?  Getting a job after graduating from a vet tech program may be difficult without the assistance of a job placement program. First, find out what the graduation rates are for the colleges you are evaluating. A lower rate might signify that the teachers were unqualified to teach the syllabus or that some students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. Next, check that the colleges have a job placement program and ask what their placement rates are. A higher placement rate could indicate that the program has an exceptional reputation within the Yazoo City MS veterinarian community and has a significant network of contacts for student placements. A lower rate might mean that the training is not well thought of by employers or that the job placement program is ineffective at placing students.

How Big are the Classes?  If the classes are bigger, you probably will receive little or no one-on-one instruction from the teachers. Solicit from the Yazoo City MS schools you are researching what their class student to teacher ratios are. You might also want to attend a couple of classes (if practical) to observe the interaction between teachers and students. Ask for feedback from students relating to the quality of instruction. Also, speak with the teachers and determine what their backgrounds are as well as their methods of teaching.

Where is the School Located?  Yes, we already talked about location, but there are a few more points to make on the subject. If you are going to drive to your veterinary technician classes from your Yazoo City MS home, you have to make sure that the commuting time fits into your schedule. For instance, driving during the weekend to investigate the route won’t be the same as the commute during rush hour traffic, particularly if the campus is located near or in a larger city. Also, if you do decide to enroll in a college in another state or even outside of your County of residence, there may be increased tuition charges particularly for state and community colleges. Of course attending online classes could be an alternative that will give you more flexibility and minimize the need for travel.

Is the Class Schedule Flexible?  And finally, it’s imperative that you find out if the veterinary programs you are exploring offer class times that are sufficiently flexible to accommodate your schedule. For example, a number of students continue to work full time and can only go to classes on the weekends or in the evenings near Yazoo City MS. Others may only be able to go to classes in the morning or later in the afternoon. Verify that the class times you need are available prior to enrolling. Also, find out if you can make up classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies. You might find that an online college is the ideal way to fit your veterinary training into your active life.

Yazoo City, Mississippi

Yazoo City is a U.S. city in Yazoo County, Mississippi. It was named after the Yazoo River, which, in turn was named by the French explorer Robert La Salle in 1682 as "Rivière des Yazous" in reference to the Yazoo tribe living near the river's mouth. It is the county seat of Yazoo County and the principal city of the Yazoo City Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is part of the larger Jackson–Yazoo City Combined Statistical Area. According to the 2010 census, the population was 11,403.[5]

A yellow fever epidemic struck Yazoo City in 1853. During the American Civil War, a makeshift shipyard was established on the Yazoo River at Yazoo City after the Confederate loss of New Orleans. The shipyard was destroyed by Union forces in 1863, but the Confederates soon recovered Yazoo City. Union forces returned the following year and this time burned down almost the entire town.

Yazoo City was rebuilt, but yellow fever struck and took more victims in 1878. On May 25, 1904, a fire destroyed much of central Yazoo City.[7] According to a local legend, the fire was caused by a witch avenging her death.[8] In reality, a boy playing with matches accidentally set a house ablaze. The fire quickly spread, and three-fourths of the town was destroyed, including most of the homes. It was stopped by a canal, which saved the new courthouse (built in 1872 to replace the one burned by the Union forces) and 10 antebellum homes nearby. The town took almost two years to recover.
